Problems with steam- help please

[Renaissance Man]

Im having trouble with steam- when I want to connect and create an account I
get the message:

Steam.exe (main exception): Unable to start Steam Engine:
*SteamStartEngine(0x12e890) failed wither error 201: Cannot perform this
application while offline

Anybody have a fix for this? I so want to play the game and yes its an
original game no pirate version

I assume you ARE connected when doing this....one possibility is if you
have a software (like Norton or winXP's) or hardware (like a dsl/cable
router) firewall configured that is blocking the ports used by Steam to
talk to your PC. Someone here probably knows what these port #'s are.
